The Temporarily Determined Dieter

by C
(Wichita,Kansas)

I excersise about 4-5 times a week. 3 days are intense weights with cardio, the other days are about an hour of cardio. My goal now for a year and half is losing 15 pounds. I am 5'7 and weighed 130 pounds 3 years ago and all of a sudden bam! 145.

Now even with the workouts I'm creeping into 148.... I have a tendency to get so determined that I am going to eat healthy and it lasts maybe a day. I say "Ok,I will write down every calorie I eat and drop my intake under 1500." Yeah, that only lasts a week at the most. I am pretty sure I have picked this up about 30 times and dropped it. I am at a loss on how to keep up with my portion and calories with out feeling guilty about everything I eat.

I feel your pain...
by: Gail

Hi, C, thanks for sharing! The thing that hits me right away is that you may be depriving yourself too much! You sound a little like me--"all or nothing!" 1500 calories is LOW!

If I were you, I'd set aside a period of time, perhaps 4 weeks. For 4 weeks, I'd make some basic changes such as:

  • Eat 3 meals and 2 snacks each day. Eat high protein foods, vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and low-fat dairy, but super light on simple carbs (sugar).
  • Don't count calories, but be aware while you're eating--chew slowly, enjoy the flavors, always stop before you feel full. Portions do matter, but you don't need to be obsessive about it. You know how to "eyeball" a reasonable portion.
  • Try not to drink your calories. If you must have a couple of drinks then go for the lower-calorie ones.
  • Regardless of what else you drink, have plenty of water. It really does help you feel full and flush out your system.
  • Weigh at the beginning and the end, but TRY to stay off the scale except perhaps once a week.
  • Do something active every day so that you sweat.
  • If you enjoy TV, get up and exercise during commercials: crunches, jumping jacks, toe touches, jog in place, yoga stretches, etc.
  • Get plenty of sleep--yes, it really does make a difference!
  • Don't stress over the weight.

I believe if you make these simple changes and forget counting every calorie, then you will see a significant change. Please check back and let us know!
