Weight Loss Tips:

- Most holiday weight gain appears fairly quickly and will disappear quickly as well, as long as you tackle it now. The longer you let it hang around, the more difficult it will be to get rid of it! Our tips for this issue will help with rapid weight loss.
- For most of us, quick weight gain is typically a build up of fluid from eating or drinking too many carbs or salty foods. To quickly eliminate that excess fluid, drink a minimum of 8 tall glasses of water a day for at least a week. Some people believe that if you drink more water, you'll retain more water, but drinking large amounts of water actually flushes your system.
- To encourage rapid weight loss, eliminate excess table salt and all overly salty foods for a week. Between this tip and drinking extra water, you'll be amazed at the drop in your weight in just 3-4 days!
- Another thing that will ensure you lose that holiday weight quickly is to eat primarily protein for one week. Try something like 2 hard-boiled eggs for breakfast, a piece of fish or chicken for lunch, and a steak for dinner. Eliminate carbs for this week and you'll be impressed with the results. Check out high protein foods, one of our newest website pages.
- Let's not forget exercise if you're trying to dump a few pounds! In addition to your regular workouts, add in some extra calorie-burn. Examine your schedule and see where you can fit in a few extra minutes of activity during your day. Walk the stairs during your work break, move while talking on the phone, make the most of your tv commercials...every little bit helps! There are also easy ways to exercise indoors without special equipment.
- Cleansing-detox diets also encourage quick weight loss. I would never recommend this for more than 2-3 days, but if you have the will power and motivation, it will definitely help you drop a few pounds. There are quite a few different ones to choose from, but one of the most popular is The Lemondade Diet.

2-Week Drastic Diet
Since this issue of The Skinny focuses on eliminating holiday weight gain quickly, I'll share a drastic diet that I tried a few years ago with my office-mates. Designed to last only two weeks, this diet is very rigid in both the amount and types of food that you are allowed to consume. You are not allowed to have sugar, starch, or dairy products on this diet. Sharing it with friends definitely made it easier to follow...Get the details of this Drastic Diet.
Speaking of rapid weight loss, The Pilot's Diet continues to stir up a lot of buzz. I think I may be trying it again for the month of January. Read more about the The Pilot's Diet and print your free copy.

About the only New Year's resolution that I ever made and stuck to was a vow to eat more fish. I've always liked it but rarely chose it over steak or chicken when eating out. With overwhelming research pointing to those powerful Omega 3s found in fish, consider eating more in 2012! I discovered this recipe at www.heart.org.
Salmon with Cilantro Pesto
Cilantro Pesto recipe: 1/2 cup loosely packed fresh cilantro 3 T fat-free, low-sodium chicken broth 2 T sliced almonds 2 T shredded or grated Parmesan cheese 1 t. salt-free garlic-herb seasoning blend
4 salmon fillets, 4 oz. each, rinsed and patted dry, 1/4 cup sliced almonds
To prepare:
Preheat oven to 400. Line baking sheet with foil or spray with cooking spray.
Use a food processor or blender to process the pesto ingredients for 15-20 seconds, or until slightly chunky.
Place the fillets about 2 inches apart on the baking sheet. Spread the pesto evenly over the top. Sprinkle with the almonds.
Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the fish flakes easily with a fork.

Start the New Year With a Commitment to Healthier Eating!
Of all the resolutions we could make, eating healthier would have the most significant impact by far! Consider making a few small changes each month that can add up over the course of the year for major wellness benefits!
I'm very proud to say that January 2012 will be one year that I've given up diet soda! I was completely addicted, drinking at least 2 Big Gulps a day, with additional cans thrown in as well. Every other time I tried to give up soda it was so difficult, but this time it seemed easy. I still don't understand why. I've probably had about 5 diet sodas this entire year and not once did I think, "I sure do miss these." I now feel as though I could have one occasionally, without being in danger of getting hooked again. One thing I've discovered is that the appeal of diet soda for me was the sensation of something COLD in my mouth and throat. That makes me hopeful that I can give up other unhealthy things I eat and drink once I understand what I like so much about them and find healthier substitutes. I think the lesson is to keep trying to move in the right direction, regardless of past failures...

Did you know it's easy to "Go Green", both with your diet and your lifestyle? Try these easy tips to help you become more "green" in 2012:
- Use local, seasonal produce as much as possible. That's a little tougher in the winter for most of us, but whenever you can, support your local farmers and co-ops. If consumers demand it, most grocery stores will make an effort to carry more local products.
- The commercial meat industry is a large part of our energy problem and some even believe it's partially responsible for climate changes due to greenhouse gas emissions. So for 2012, plan 2 vegetarian meals each week. I'm not interested in giving up meat entirely, but I can certainly cut back and still be satisfied.
- Consider kicking your soda habit in 2012. Saving on aluminum and plastic would be a really good thing for the environment.
- Eliminate or drastically reduce the fast food stops you make this year. You could help the landfills AND your waistline!
- Instead of buying yogurt, (which is very good for you), in small individual containers, buy one container and separate it into portions yourself. See how many other products you can do this with.
