Top Tips of the Month:

  • Most Americans consume more than double the amount of sodium recommended! Vow for this one month to reduce your salt intake. If you eat a lot of processed food, there's nothing you can do about the added sodium. They need it to preserve the food. Try to make a conscious effort not to add more salt before eating. You can experiment with alternative products like Mrs. Dash or you can try using more herbs and other seasonings. Preparing your own foods from scratch though, will be the easiest and healthiest way to reduce your sodium intake! Your blood pressure will thank you and you'll retain less fluid, which will result in a drop on the scale!

  • Speaking of foods prepared from scratch, try shortening your food chain this month. Give up processed foods for one month and enjoy the abundance of fresh autumn produce and fruits. Not only is it good for your health, but it's good for your waistline! Check out your local farmer's markets and seafood markets. Try some things you've never tried before. Expand your culinary horizons!

  • Make a list of 5-10 quick and easy healthy meals that you can whip up without much effort. Have those items on hand. When you're not prepared, you're more likely to order out, eat frozen foods, and overindulge!

  • Finally, remember that we are entering the most dangerous time of the year for those of us that want to lose weight! It's not uncommon for people to gain 7-10 pounds between Halloween and New Years! There's no reason to deprive yourself, but remember that it's called holiday and not holimonth! Enjoy yourself at the social functions but let it end there--don't bring it home--and don't indulge again until the next social function. Be extra vigilant in between your functions so that it all evens out by January 1st!

I can't tell you how many pedometers I've purchased in the last five years! They just never seem to work right and I'm never quite sure if it's me or them!

I've found something new that I'm very excited about! I's a pedometer called the Tanita Step 3Axes Pedometer, PD-724. Tanita is a well-respected company, so I'm hoping for big things!

What drew me to this particular pedometer is that you can wear it around your neck, in your pocket, or even in your purse, thanks to some special technology that is over my head. It also has a personal alarm, a clock, and a 7-day memory. This product is comparably priced at $34.99; and I'm looking forward to using mine to see if it can change my opinion about pedometers!

Check out the Tanita Step here!

Hot Weight Loss Topic:

Finding Love in All the Right Places!

There is a growing number of websites devoted to matching up singles with, shall we say, “more to love.” Many overweight singles feel discriminated against by the men and women matched up with them on traditional sites such as Match.com and eHarmony.com.

The dating companies would provide matches as promised, but often the potential dates would back out when they discovered their matches were overweight, even though honest, accurate pictures were originally posted.

Sites such as MoretoLove.com, BBPeopleMeet.com, and BBWRomance.com are gaining in popularity. Not surprising when you consider that two-thirds of all Americans are overweight.

Recipe of the Month:

Low-Fat Pumpkin Pie
(from Sharon Haugen and allrecipes.com)

1-15 ounce can pumpkin
1-14 ounce can fat-free sweetened condensed milk
1/2 cup egg substitute
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
1/2 tsp. ground ginger
1 9-inch unbaked pastry shell

In a large mixing bowl, combine the first seven ingredients; beat just until smooth.

Pour into pastry shell. Bake at 425 degrees F for 15 minutes.

Reduce heat to 350 degrees F; bake 25-30 minutes longer or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.

Cool on a wire rack. Store in the refrigerator.

Did you know?

  • Overweight men and women tend to pack on pounds from job stress and financial pressures, according to Dr. Jason Block, lead researcher at Harvard Medical School. Studies conducted between 1995 and 2004 indicated that normal-weight people do not gain weight from stress. Interesting, huh?

  • Fiber lowers your risk of diabetes, heart disease, diverticulitis, and constipation! Most adult women should shoot for over 20 grams of fiber a day; men should shoot for over 30 grams. Gnu high fiber bars are delicious, reasonably priced, and packed with fiber. According to www.gnu.com, "One Gnu Bar a day gives you 12 grams of seriously good-for-you soluble and insoluble fiber. That's nearly 50% of your Daily Value of fiber in a delicious and healthy bar!" Use our code and get a discount on your first order!

  • www.goodfoodnearyou.com is a free Web and mobile service that lets you search for restaurants based on the nutritional value of their food. Simply punch in your zip code and find the information you need to help you make healthy and wise food choices.

  • Americans are consuming 22 teaspoons of sugar every day! The American Heart Association states that most of this sugar comes from soda and candy. Women should get no more than 6 teaspoons of sugar daily, while the limit for men is 9 teaspoons. Additional research has shown that boys, ages 14-18, consume 34 teaspoons a day! Not enough incentive to reduce your sugar intake? Consider this…a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition indicates that sugar suppresses the immune system! Can we avoid swine flu by reducing sugar?

  • Only 14% of adults eat the recommended servings of fruit and vegetables each day. For high school students, the percentage drops to 9.5%!

  • One of the very best diet motivators is to track your food and exercise. Keeping a food and exercise journal may actually double the number of pounds that a dieter loses according to a recent study published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine. If writing down every calorie you eat is too labor-intensive, don't despair! Recording your food and the approximate amounts is just as effective as long as you record everything you eat. It's no surprise that those tastes and bites add up! For a convenient way to record this information, see our Easy Weight Loss Tips' 30-Day Food & Exercise Log!
